Challenges
Challenges are the individual tasks within a station. When creating one you pick one of six challenge types. The type decides how participants answer and whether the answer can be scored automatically.
Overview
| Type | Participants answer with | Auto-scorable |
|---|---|---|
| Text | free text | no |
| Quiz | one of several answer options | yes |
| QR code | a scanned code | yes |
| Photo | an uploaded image | no |
| Video | an uploaded video | no |
| Creative | text and/or photo | no |
What "auto-scorable" means and how to set it up: Scoring Rules.
Text
Open text input, up to 5,000 characters — a fixed limit, not something set per challenge. Participants see their character count as they type.
Suitable for descriptions, observations, short pieces of writing. Scored by a coordinator; add a solution / reference answer if it helps to make clear what the task was after.
Quiz
Selection of one answer option. Configure:
- Answer options — any number
- optionally Auto-approve plus the correct answer
Quiz challenges are not auto-scored by default
Only when you enable Auto-approve and select a correct answer. Without that, a coordinator scores the quiz by hand as well.
Multiple choice — several answers correct at once — is not supported.
QR code
Participants scan a code with the camera. If the camera fails or the code will not read, they can type the value in by hand — the challenge is never a dead end.
Optionally configure Auto-approve plus the expected QR value. The comparison is character for character; take the value from the real code rather than typing it out (Scoring Rules).
Photo
Participants upload an image. Nothing to configure beyond description and points. Scored by a coordinator, who sees the image while scoring.
Video
Participants upload a video. Nothing to configure beyond description and points. Scored by a coordinator, who can play the video while scoring.
Videos are large
A video costs many times the storage of a photo and takes noticeably longer to upload over mobile data. Use video challenges sparingly — at locations with good reception, and towards the end rather than the start.
Creative
Text and photo combined. Participants must provide at least one of the two, and may provide both. Scored by a coordinator.
On every type
- Title and description / instructions, multilingual (DE + EN)
- Maximum points
- Solution / reference answer (optional, visible only during scoring)
- Estimated duration in minutes (optional)
